Slow Cooker Lamb Rogan Josh

This recipe is a delicious slow cooker lamb Rogan josh that is packed with flavor and has a nice amount of heat to it.

Slow Cooker Lamb Rogan Josh

The amount of flavor this curry has is absolutely astonishing. One bite and you will find it very hard to stop eating. The flavor is all thanks to the lamb and a great range of spices such as cardamom, cumin, cloves, turmeric, and more.

I make use of a homemade curry paste, but this may be too much work, especially if time is limited. If this is the case, you can swap out all the spices for a store-bought curry sauce such as the Pataks rogan josh.

You should be able to feed roughly six people from a single batch of this recipe without needing to make alterations. You can easily double or triple the recipe if you think it will not make enough.

What to Serve with Lamb Rogan Josh

As with any curry, this is best served with some accompaniments. Below are some recommendations on what you can do.

The easiest and tastiest side dish is some delicious steamed rice. You can cook the rice over the stove, or you can take the easy option and cook it in a rice cooker. For something a little healthier, you can try making some cauliflower rice.

I love to make some homemade naan bread to have with the curry. If you do not have the time to make them from scratch, then you can purchase them at most good supermarkets.

Lamb Rogan Josh with rice and yogurt

If you are willing to try something slightly different, you can try serving the curry over the top of some mashed potatoes. It is a different but delicious way to serve a curry.

Personally, I love to enjoy this curry without any additional side dishes, as I find it has more than enough flavor. If you have any ideas for side dishes, then I would love to hear them.

Keeping the Curry for Later

I often love to cook a large batch of curry and keep it in the fridge or freezer for later. It is one of those meals that reheat very nicely, sometimes even better than when it was fresh.

The curry should keep for roughly three days in the refrigerator. Alternatively, it will last for up to three months in the freezer. It may last longer in the freezer, but it will start to degrade in quality.

  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 Tbsp ginger, crushed

  • 1/2 tsp cloves, ground

Recipe Tips

  • You can bulk out this slow cooker lamb rogan josh by adding some cubed potatoes, carrots, or even some lentils. It is up to you, but it will change the overall texture and taste of the curry.
  • Mixing the yogurt straight into the hot curry can cause the yogurt to split and not combine correctly. Heating the yogurt will help reduce the chance of it splitting.
  • You can skip the browning of the meat and the cooking of the curry paste. Instead, just throw everything into the slow cooker. However, you may find the curry will not turn out nearly as good and be missing that extra boost in flavor.
  • Turn the slow cooker to high and cook for three to four hours if you are in a bit of a hurry.

Note: I use a 5.5L (6 Quart) slow cooker for all the recipes that I have on this website unless specified. If you have a smaller or larger slow cooker, then you might need to adjust the ingredients.

More Slow Cooker Curries

There are so many different types of curries that you are able to do in the slow cooker.

I have been slowly building up an excellent collection of great curries. The delicious butter chicken curry is one you need to try.

Another curry that I reckon you will love is the chicken tikka masala. Like this recipe, it uses a homemade curry paste that really helps bring out as much flavor as possible. I highly recommend giving it a try.

The directions reference curry paste but it is not listed in the ingredients

The curry paste is the spices, tomato paste, onion, etc. you fry in the pan.

What you’re making with all the spices is the curry paste. I thought the same thing when i read it. lol

This looks great – thanks Gus, just a quick question, if I chose to use a ready made paste – do you have a guide on what quantity?

    Thanks
    Celia

      Hi Celia,

Sorry, no guide as of yet, I’ll look into doing something soon. In the meantime I would probably use 3-5 Tbsp. of a ready made paste. Leave everything out except the lamb, onion, tomato paste, and crushed tomatoes. (Maybe keep the garlic and ginger if you love those)

    Hi Gus,
The cooking tips mention “Mixing the yogurt straight into the hot curry can cause the yogurt to split and not combine correctly”, but I can’t see a step for mixing in yogurt in the recipe? Do you mix the yogurt into the curry at the end of cooking time or do you just dollop the yogurt on top to serve?
    Thanks,
    Philippa

      Hi Philippa,

It’s up to you. Mine split when I added it to the hot curry, so I am a bit cautious about adding it as a step. If you’re worried it will split, then it’s still great with dolloped on top. Warming the yogurt beforehand will also help prevent it splitting it.

Hi, I would leave out the cloves next time as. They overwhelmed the flavour, but otherwise good

Hi all. Tried this recipe today with some modifications:

    – 50/50 steak pork mix (as no fresh lamb available)
    – added the yogurt to all the spices, tomato paste with 2 tbsp oil at the beginning to make the paste, then added this paste to the pan with the meat onion and garlic. Then all together in the slow cooker with a tin of pureed tomatoes. The yogurt did not separate. I used natural SET yogurt.
    – 150ml beef stock
    – 1 tsp brown sugar
    – 75gr grated almonds (brown colour) for thickening.

All this went very well in the 3.5l pot at about 3/4 full. Perfect!

Naan bread and a dip made of set yogurt, pressed garlic, salt, pepper and dill. Yummy!

This dish was delicious. I took the spices and put in a zip-lock bag. I added the lamb and coated it with the spice: I had already sautéed the onion and garlic, I then added the lamb to the pan for searing: I need to add I used 2 onions and 6 cloves of garlic. When I seared the lamb the kitchen smelled amazing. After all was browned it went into the crock-pot. Cooked for 7 hours: Took sauce from meat mixed in with cold yogurt. Then folded into meat mix, plus added 2 tsp of salt and pepper: let it cook on low until lo else was ready. The lamb was so tender and flavorful. Will cook again!

You can use diced tomatoes, fresh or tinned. Another option is to use passata, though the texture of the curry will not be as nice.

My favourite slow cooker recipe. However, so far I have just used pataks rogan josh paste. I add in the lamb, onion, garlic, crushed tomatoes and ginger as well. I use the entire jar, as it is for 1 kg lamb. Cook the onion garlic, remove, brown the lamb, remove, heat the paste for a few minutes then mix through the lamb then all goes in the slow cooker. I mix a little of the sauce with the yoghurt at the end to dilute it and heat it up, then add it to the Curry. It tastes even better the next day.

This is my favourite Lamb Rogan Josh Recipe. I have tried a couple of other ones when I have had trouble finding this one but none can beat this one. So simple and works perfect.
